Making Habits

So perhaps you can't be bothered to train today, or perhaps the idea of a grabbing a protein shake is not as appealing as that Big Mac. We have all had moments like this, and sometimes all it takes is that one thing to push you over the edge, be it the quick beer that you grabbed with a mate last night that turned to ten, or styaing up late to watch that movie.
How do the greats manage to keep training and stick to a diet plan whilst dealing with whatever life has to throw at them? Well, they follow rituals that have formed habits that they follow, you know those daily routines. Right now you might be thinking that you cannot stick with a plan, nor follow a routine.
The funny thing is that there was a time when brushing your teeth twice, even once a day, was not a habit and it took constant badgering from caring parents or siblings to make sure you brushed. The point is despite the talk of rotting teeth, or the dentists drill we did not naturally have the habit of brushing our teeth when we were young. Either you have picked up the habit, or you are wearing a nice pair of dentures.
Physchologists have a theory that it takes 21 days of repeated application to form a habit. So start out with something simple, such as making yourself a proper breakfast for 21 days, and prove to yourself you can make a habit and stick to it. This element of control is fantastic for helping you to overcome those low moments when you feel you cannot stick to it.
Try these five simple steps:
- Pick out an area of your training, nutrtion or general life which is going to benefit from this habit.
- Ask yourself what is preventing you from currently achieving it, why have you not got this habit already?
- What would have to happen for you to achieve it?
- What would you need to give up in order to achieve this, and is it still what you want?
- What repetative steps can you take again and again to form a habit to help you achieve it?
We here at SNES are on hand to help you with both training and nutrition advice.
